FAQs About Massage Therapy

How do I know which massage to choose?

We’ll help you choose the right option before you come in. When you book, our reception team will ask a few simple questions about what you’re dealing with and what you’d like from the session. If you’re still unsure, we can arrange for one of our massage therapists to give you a quick call to talk it through and recommend the most suitable type of massage for you.

Are some massage therapies painful?

Some types of massage can feel intense in places, especially sports massage, deep tissue, and work on tight “problem” areas. It’s normal to feel a level of discomfort at times, but it should stay manageable and should never feel sharp, alarming, or like you have to brace yourself. Our therapists will work within your threshold and adjust pressure and technique as needed, so the treatment is effective but tolerable. After deeper massage, it’s also quite common to feel a bit sore for a day or two, similar to post-exercise ache. If anything feels unusually painful, or you feel worse rather than gradually easier, let us know.

What should I wear?

For most massage treatments, we need access to the skin in the areas being treated. You will usually be asked to undress to a level you are comfortable with. Towels are used throughout to maintain your privacy, and we also have gowns available if you would prefer to use one. What you wear, or remove, will depend on the type of massage and the areas we are working on. Your therapist will talk this through with you before treatment starts, so nothing feels awkward or unclear.

What should I do after my massage?

Staying well hydrated is the most important thing after massage, especially following deeper work. What you do afterwards will depend on the type and intensity of massage you’ve had. Some people feel relaxed and ready for a quiet day. Others are fine to carry on as normal. Your therapist will advise you on the best course for you, including activity levels, exercise, or anything to avoid for a short time.

Are there times when massage is not recommended?

Yes. In some situations massage may need to be avoided or adapted, for example with certain medical conditions, infections, or recent injuries. Your therapist will ask a few questions before treatment to make sure massage is safe and appropriate for you. If massage is not the right option, this will be explained clearly.
