Top 3 Headache Tips

About Headaches

Headaches affect 80-90% of the population and range from a mild annoyance all the way to totally debilitating agony.

There are a variety of different types of headaches and they all come with different patterns of pain, timing, duration etc. One thing that all these different types of headaches do have in common is that there IS a reason why they're there.

70% of headaches come from the neck and with this being the case it makes a lot of sense for everyone who suffers to get their neck checked for misalignment and restriction.

At Wells Chiropractic and Osteopathy Centre we specialise in uncovering the underlying cause for your headaches so that we can correct the true problem so that the pain stays away for good.

That is why we are offering a  £10 Headache Consultation with a full examination including neurological and orthopaedic tests, posture analysis, lifestyle analysis and results appointment with a fully registered osteopath or chiropractor.

Until we can help you with your headaches though we have put together 3 headache tips to help you begin coping with yours better.

Headache Tip #1

How heavy is your head?

Ideally your ear should sit directly over the mid-point of your shoulder. Every inch of forward head carriage you have adds 10lbs of extra pressure to the muscles in the back of your neck.

If the head is over 3 inches in front of the shoulder, this equates to over 30lb of extra pressure on the neck! Imagine walking around all day every day carrying 30lbs in front of you, that would cause problems right?

The tip that you can start implementing from today is to make sure that you are not slouching. Sit and stand up straight with your chest up and your chin up.

Just making this small adjustment can begin changing the intensity and frequency of headaches.

Headache Tip #2

The neck is made up of 7 bones (vertebra) and they should sit in alignment and move freely in different directions.  If we have a spinal joint dysfunction, then we get nerve interference!

As you can imagine this nerve interference can affect the body in many ways including reducing the way it performs, works and even health!

Headaches can be symptomatic of a spinal joint dysfunction and nerve interference.

Ultimately you do need your neck checked by someone who is trained to find these spinal joint dysfunctions (as we do at Wells Chiropractic and Osteopathy Centre) but until we see you the best thing you can do is make sure you try to keep your posture in alignment, move frequently and try to keep stress to a minimum. Doing these things will help to reduce the severity and frequency of these dysfunctions occurring.

Headache Tip #3

Which leads us nicely into our third tip - De-Stress!

If you do have problems with your neck that are causing your headaches, then often you will find that when you get stressed the problem gets worse and headaches get worse.

This tip isn't necessarily correcting any underlying problem but what it is doing is reducing one of the triggers to your headaches.

So try to remove yourself as quickly as possible from the stressful situation, close your eyes and rest, massage your neck and temples, and use a breathing technique or maybe some gentle movement.

Stressful situations! They're damaging your body in more ways than just headaches.
